Fostering Academic Competence in Latinx Youth. The Role of Cultural Values and Parenting Behaviors.
123 Latinx youth from the U.S. Midwest told us about their academic aspirations and expectations, familism values, and relationship quality with their parents. Youth who endorse familism might be motivated to bring pride to their family by doing well in school. Differences between paternal and maternal warmth associations may be time-bound. Familism predicted higher academic aspirations & expectations for youth with low & average maternal warmth in 6th-7th grade. Familism predicted higher academic attachment for youth with low paternal warmth in 5th-6th grade. Strength-based approach: Programs designed to increase Latinx youth's academic aspirations, expectations, and school attachment could benefit from highlighting the socialization processes of Latinx parents, such as the socialization of family values.
